The First World War left hundreds of thousands of British families grieving for loved ones.
Dr Alice Vernon examines the growing interest in spiritualism that followed the conflict, including attempts to communicate with the dead and ideas surrounding ‘Summerland’, an imagined peaceful afterlife that offered comfort in the face of traumatic loss.
