Anthony Bale charts the miraculous sights and wonders of the Middle Ages, through the eyes of those who navigated it.
About the event
The Middles Ages were punctuated with miraculous wonders and long-lost landmarks. From the bazaars of Tabriz to the mysterious island of Caldihe, where sheep were said to grow on trees, the medieval period offered a world of adventure and surprise for those who lived in it.
Anthony Bale uses the eyewitness testimonies of scholars, spies and saints who travelled the globe, from western Europe to the Far East, the Antipodes, and the ends of the earth, to offer the perfect guide to traversing the world during the Middle Ages.
About the speaker
Anthony Bale is Professor of Medieval Studies at Birkbeck, University of London. He has edited and translated several medieval texts, as well as new translations and editions of ‘The Book of Marvels and Travels’ by John Mandeville, ‘The Book of Margery Kempe’, and ‘Medieval English Travel’, a sourcebook.
