Roger Moorhouse tells the story of Hitler’s U-boat war through the experiences and recollections of the U-boat crew members.
About the event
For Allied seamen during the Second World War, the U-boat was a hidden menace: a faceless killer lurking beneath the waves, accounting for almost 3,000 sunk ships.
However, the danger existed on both sides. Germany’s U-boat crews posted the highest losses of any combat arm during the conflict. Some 30,000 German submariners were killed – more than three-quarters of the total number deployed.
Using archival sources, unpublished diaries and surviving memoirs, Roger Moorhouse gives a voice to these U-boatmen, allowing their side of the story to be aired in a comprehensive manner for the first time.
