About the event

Chelsea is often associated with the lives of royals and artists, yet the area also has a fascinating military history.

This guided walk will explore some of the streets where Chelsea personalities made their mark on the history of conflict. Hear how American band leader Glenn Miller managed to cheat death, discover unsung medical innovators, and a secret connection between Chelsea and the Tower of London.

The tour will start and end at the National Army Museum. It will last for approximately an hour and a half.

About the speaker

Mike Armitage has been one of the foremost guides in London for over ten years. He delights in showing the major sites in London, as well as hidden corners and unknown details of this historic and modern city. Mike is particularly interested in the history of the First and Second World Wars and enjoys sharing the visible traces these conflicts have left in London.

Are bikes or scooters allowed?

Bikes (including folding bikes) and scooters are not permitted. There are bike racks located along Royal Hospital Road. These can be used to secure any bikes and scooters.

Please do not secure any bikes or scooters to the railings outside the Royal Hospital Chelsea or Burton Court. Any items secure to these railings will be removed.

Will the walk go ahead if the weather is wet?

Walks will continue in wet conditions, so please dress appropriately.

Can I bring children?

Please adhere to the age range specified for events on the listings page and if appropriate please book a ticket for your child. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult approved by the parent/guardian. This person can accompany a maximum of four children per event. Where permitted, any child over the age of two needs their own seat for events.

The event organiser cannot be responsible for unsupervised children.
